Detroit first BATTLE of the Bands in who-knows-how-many years!

All Night Entertainment presents the Big Band, Big Floor, Big Crowd Fourteen, Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the Masonic Temple Crystal Ballroom in Detroit.

Dancers and music lovers will bask in swinging sounds as two great bands compete: Paul King and the Rhythm Society Orchestra (PK&RSO) versus Phil Ogilvie’s Rhythm Kings (PORK), two of the best dance bands in the Midwest.

PK&RSO, a 15-piece band, specializes in true vintage swing. Their sound is heavily influenced by Count Basie and Harry James. They have covered the top swing venues throughout the Midwest. Crooner Paul King has been described as a mix of Mel Torme, Joe Williams and Frank Sinatra, with a dash of Cab Calloway thrown in. Detroit’s Metro Times jokes, “His voice has been banned in some nightclubs for inducing public displays of affection on the floor.” The have been nominated for Detroit Music Awards including Best Big Band/Swing artists, Outstanding Jazz Vocalist and Outstanding Jazz Instrumentalists. They are very popular among Detroit area dancers.

10-piece PORK is well known and loved among Ann Arbor dancers and music lovers for their 1920s and early 30s-style jazz and swing, influenced by King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington. All members are top musicians and highly skilled jazz soloists. Music Director James Dapogny has been professor of music at U of M for more than 30 years and holds a Grammy nomination as well as Jazz Artist of the Year for one Ann Arbor publication. They have performed at countless dances and “A-list” events and have just released their first album.

General admission begins at 7 p.m. with a dance lesson from 7 to 8 p.m. The bands will play sets until 1 a.m. with DJ Cochese filling the band breaks with salsa, cha-cha, hustle, west coast, foxtrot, waltz and other ballroom music. There is a cash bar available throughout the evening. Dress is semi-formal or vintage attire.

Tickets are $20 per person in advance or $22 at the door. Add $5 for the lesson. Tables of eight may be reserved in advance for $22 per person ($27 with the lesson). Secured, lighted parking is available in the Masonic's north parking lot for $6 per vehicle.
